Privacy Policy

Introduction

Proton Video Compressor ("the app", "we", "us") is a free, ad-supported Android application that compresses video files on your device. This policy explains what data is collected when you use the app, who it is shared with, why, and what rights you have over it.

The app is not directed at children under 13. If you are under 13, please do not use the app. We do not knowingly collect data from children under 13.

What We Collect

All compression work happens locally on your device. We do not upload your video files. The data we collect falls into the categories below.

1 — Analytics & Usage Events

Collected only if you give consent. When analytics is enabled, we collect anonymised events describing how you use the app: app launch and exit, video selection (file size, duration, dimensions, MIME type), compression start, result, and cancel events, quality settings you choose, and emoji reaction feedback (thumbs up/down). Events may also include the file system path and storage bucket of the selected video — this is collected solely to identify whether a file is in a protected or restricted directory, for debugging purposes, and is not used to infer any personal information about you.

No personally identifiable information is attached to these events. Each user is represented by two auto-generated, randomly assigned anonymous identifiers: a Mixpanel anonymous ID (generated by the Mixpanel SDK) and a Firebase App Instance ID (generated by Firebase Analytics per app install). Neither is linked to your name, email, or any other identifying information.

2 — Crash Reports

Collected only if you give consent. When crash reporting is enabled, Firebase Crashlytics collects crash and error logs that include device manufacturer, model, Android version, app version, a stack trace of the error, and a Crashlytics Installation UUID — a randomly generated, per-install identifier used to deduplicate crash reports across sessions. This identifier is not linked to your name or any other personal information, but it does allow crash events from the same install to be grouped together.

3 — Campaign Attribution (Install Referrer)

Collected only if analytics consent is given. When you install the app through a tracked campaign link, we record the install referrer string, the app version at install time, and click and install timestamps provided by Google Play. This is used only to understand which marketing channels are effective.

4 — Advertising

The app shows ads served by Google AdMob. AdMob may collect device information and your Google Advertising ID (GAID) — a resettable, anonymous identifier assigned by Android — to serve and measure ads. You can reset or opt out of ad personalisation via Android Settings → Privacy → Ads. In the European Economic Area (EEA), United Kingdom, and Switzerland, we show a consent form powered by Google's User Messaging Platform (UMP) before ads are initialised. If you decline personalised ads, AdMob will serve non-personalised ads instead.

The following third-party SDKs and services are integrated in the app. Each operates under its own privacy policy, linked below.

How We Use Your Data

Legal Basis for Processing (GDPR)

If you are in the EEA, United Kingdom, or Switzerland, we rely on the following legal bases under GDPR Article 6:

Managing Your Consent

You can change your choices at any time without any penalty:

Withdrawing consent does not affect the lawfulness of any processing that occurred before withdrawal.

Data Sharing

We do not sell your data. Data is shared only with the third-party processors listed in the table above, and only to the extent necessary for the purposes described. We do not share data with any other parties except:

International Data Transfers

Firebase (Google LLC) and Mixpanel are US-based services. If you are in the EEA, UK, or Switzerland, your data may be transferred to and processed in the United States. These transfers are protected by Standard Contractual Clauses (SCCs) approved by the European Commission, and by Google's and Mixpanel's respective data processing agreements.

Data Retention

Data type Retention
Mixpanel analytics events Up to 25 months (Mixpanel default)
Firebase Analytics events 14 months (Firebase default)
Firebase Crashlytics crash logs 90 days (Firebase default)
Local compression history (on-device Room database) Stored on your device; deleted when you uninstall or clear app data

Retention periods above reflect default settings at the time of writing and may change. Refer to each provider's privacy policy for the most current figures.

Your Rights

Depending on your location you may have the following rights over your personal data. To exercise any of them, contact us at artensonartdev@gmail.com. We will respond within 30 days.

Because nearly all data collected by the app is fully anonymous — no name, email, or other identifier is linked to it — most data subject rights have limited practical scope. We cannot look up, retrieve, or delete analytics or crash records tied to a specific individual because no such link exists. The most effective way to exercise control is via the Settings toggles described above.

Access

Request information about what types of data the app collects. We cannot retrieve individual records as no personal identifier is stored.

Erasure

Disable analytics and crash reporting in Settings to stop future collection. We cannot delete past anonymous records as they cannot be linked to you.

Portability

The data we collect is anonymous and not associated with any individual, so individual data export is not applicable.

Rectification

We hold no profile or personal record linked to you, so rectification is not applicable for anonymous analytics data.

Restriction & Objection

Disable collection at any time via Settings → analytics and crash report toggles.

Withdraw consent

Change your analytics, crash reporting, or ad consent at any time via Settings. Withdrawal does not affect prior lawful processing.

Supervisory Authority

If you are in the EEA or UK, you have the right to lodge a complaint with your local data protection authority (e.g. ICO in the UK, or your national DPA in the EU).

California residents (CCPA/CPRA). You have the right to know what personal information is collected, to opt out of the "sale" or "sharing" of personal information, and to non-discrimination for exercising your rights. We do not sell personal information. Analytics and crash data shared with Firebase and Mixpanel is shared with service providers under data processing agreements, not sold. To opt out of analytics entirely, disable the toggle in Settings.

Children's Privacy

The app is not directed at children under the age of 13, and we do not knowingly collect personal data from children under 13. Advertising is configured to explicitly disable child-directed treatment and under-age-of-consent targeting. If you believe a child under 13 has used the app, contact us at artensonartdev@gmail.com. As all analytics data is anonymous and not linked to any individual, we are unable to identify or isolate records from a specific user, but we will investigate and take appropriate action.

Security

All data transmitted by the app uses HTTPS. We rely on Google Firebase and Mixpanel's security infrastructure for data at rest. No method of electronic transmission or storage is 100% secure. If you have concerns about a specific data handling practice, please contact us.

Changes to This Policy

We may update this policy when our data practices change. The "Effective" date at the top of this page will reflect the date of the most recent revision. For material changes affecting consent-based processing, we will notify you within the app.
